James II, Gold Touchpiece, 1.92g, 19mm, obv. IACO II D G M B FR ET HI REX, Royal ship sailing left, rev. SOLI DEO GLORIA, Archangel Michael slaying dragon; used in the 'Touching for the King’s Evil' ceremony, whereby the King touched victims of Scrofula in the belief this would cure them, this 'touch piece' was then given to the patient as a sign they had been touched and was intended to be worn as a pendant; holed as usual, small piece missing from edge and slightly creased flan o/wise fine and rare

Our November specialist Coins and Banknotes sale will feature a good range of coins to appeal to collectors of all fields. From Celtic staters to modern Royal Mint issues and everything in between. There is a small but significant collection of hammered gold coins, some in excellent condition and seldom offered at auction.
One of the highlights of the selection is a fantastic Henry VI, Anglo-Gallic salut d’or, struck at Rouen, Normandy in the first half of the 15th century, the coin is in excellent condition with the devices clear and well stuck. A wonderful Henry VIII, first coinage angel adds further appeal to the hammered section, especially in such a well-preserved state.
Enthusiasts of more modern Royal Mint proof coinage will not be disappointed with a large offering of both gold and silver boxed sets and coins. In addition, there is a sizeable offering of sovereigns and silver proof coinage.
