Lot 590

590

Follower of Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA, FRS (1769-1830)
Portrait of Miss Catherine Hill-Rennie, three-quarter length, seated, wearing a red dress trimmed with white lace at the décolletage
Oil on panel, 30cm dia. (oval)

Provenance: The vendor is a descendant of the sitter

Sold for £320
Estimated at £120 - £180

Moved in frame. Panel slightly distored - bottom right corner when viewed from the reverse protrudes backwards. The upper portion of the panel is held under tension with nails across the grain. There is a wooden block between the picture and the frame rebate at the bottom to compensate for the curvature of the panel. Minor knocks to the reverse of the panel. No splits visible. Drying cracks throughout - some tight and raised wrinkled type cracks, and some broad and open. All stable. A few old scattered retouched losses, e.g. top right of hair. Possibly some further overpaint in the background, but difficult to see due to obscuring dirt and varnish. A little thinning of the paint in places, e.g. shadows of nose and chin (retouched) and to the chest. In the chest there are remnants of what looks to be an over paint layer. Partially cleaned in the past. Thick old degraded and discoloured varnish in the background, and an upper varnish. Thick durface dirt layer with scuffs and accretions including white flecks to the chin and chest.

Frame: damaged old composition frame with large sections missing (see pictures), and other sections cracked.
