A Hubert Simpson of Kendal Oak Sideboard, circa 1923, number 7536, with raised upstand with carved pattern enclosing a H for Hartree, above a rectangular top, above four graduating drawers enclosing two cupboard doors, above a H stretcher, 132cm wide, 55cm deep, 110.5cm high
Wright (Hugh) The Beautiful Furniture of The Simpsons of Kendal, Bookcase, similar sideboard illustrated page 158, mentioned on page 196 "My fourth bill is for a beautiful sideboard, numbered 9680 on August 31st, 1933. It is one of Hubert's finest pieces, made in oak with door surrounds and handles of bog oak. It has all the firms features, pain flat surfaces, lovely timber, square legs, front corners taken off, plywood bottomed drawers which are fitted to accept seasonal movement and then nailed and a beautifully finished back with, on the sides of the back panels, tiny beads. Unusually, the doors are battened on the back, rather than cleated. The bill is stamped paid, with a circular frank on top of two penny postage stamps which says "The favour of your recommendation would be esteemed." With the cost; £21.0.0 and Hubert's initials."
This sideboard was made for Douglas Rayner Hartree and Elaine Charlton of Keswick. They were married in 1923.
