George Smart (d.1846) was a tailor of Frant near Tunbridge Wells, who was well known for these individual pictures of local characters which were popular with tourists visiting the Regency spa of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Other well known subjects by this artist included the Earthstopper and the Goosewoman.
