A Palais Royal Ebony Sewing Box, mid 19th century, of scallop form, the hinged cover set with a mother-of-pearl shell carved with an urn, swags and foliage within steel picqué work, scrolls, diamonds and swags, opening to reveal a mirror and lift-out tray with compartments, containing a gold bodkin case, a gold mounted cut glass scent bottle and a gold mounted steel pair of scissors, the cylinder musical movement playing four airs on a single steel comb, gold items with eagle guarantee mark only, 16.5cm wide

Originally the residence of Cardinal Richelieu, the Palais Royal was partially developed into shopping arcades at the end of the 18th century and became notable for the sale of expensive luxury goods

. Box with wear and some minor splitting. Cloth cover to underside of base in poor condition. Some items lacking from fitted compartments to interior. Some staining to material on interior. Scissors with one arm broken. Musical movement currently not working and with one tooth to comb missing. 021019
