In fully restored condition. Re lined, cleaned and re varnished. The majority of the right hand side of the painting excepting the flowers is over painted. Two further small areas of retouching/ over painting within the crown of his wig. Background above his extended arm also shows extensive over painting, as does the side of his chair. There is evidence of various significant vertical and horizontal damages with associated repairs visible with the naked eye and of a inferior quality/ deteriorating throughout the left hand side half of the picture, one extending through his arm at his wrist, others clustering around the ship and within the area above this. Varnish is opaque in places. Small loss lower edge towards left hand side. Superficial surface scratch at his left hand upper arm. Areas of fine stable craquelure throughout. Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish etc. Probably early 19th century.
