Sold for £900
Estimated at £300 - £500
A significant proportion of the sky is over painted with a smaller area of re-touching in the background towards the crucifix on the right hand side with the lower part of the clouds on the left hand side also receiving the same treatment. Aside from some further isolated and fine areas of retouching within the flesh of the figures by eye the figure group appears to have some patches of restoration where the paint is thick, textured and carries more pronounced cracquelure. This includes : the shoulders of the angel holding a cross, the dark shadows between the two other figures, the belt of the angel standing, the area closet to the body of this angel at the base of the wings, the lower right hand corner, etc. The painting is covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish with fine stable cracquelure throughout.
