Italian School in the manner of Filippino Lippi (1459-1504) Pierfrancesco de Medici il Vecchio...

Italian School in the manner of Filippino Lippi (1459-1504)
Pierfrancesco de Medici il Vecchio
Inscribed, oil on panel, 62.5cm by 50cm

It is conceivable that all known portraits of Pierfrancesco de Medici are based on Filippino Lippi's 1496 "Adoration of the Magi" created for the high altar of the church of San Donato a Scopeto, on the outskirts of Florence and now held in the Uffizi Gallery. The king is depicted in the lower left quadrant and was identified as Pierfrancesco by Vasari in 1550.

The Uffizi also houses a further profile portrait ascribable to the school of Bronzino of the same sitter.

With red wax seal to the reverse, reputedly relating to the Niccolini family in Florence.

Provenance: Possible collection of the Niccolini Family of Florence, Italy
Benjamin Beaulah (1794-1874), reputedly huntsman to Lord Yarborough
John Beaulah (1827- c.1910), Burstwick, Yorkshire
Bequeathed 1927
Thence by descent

There is a vertical split to the panel on the left hand side approx 4 cms from the edge which is more prominent in the upper half, but is affecting the full length, associated re-touching to the front. Further re-touching along the left hand side edge and much of the background, perhaps 75 % has been over painted at seemingly different periods. The top half of his ear and back of his head has also been restored, his eye area and lower half of his face has also been treated. There is a patch of over painting at his collar approx 5 cms in diameter. Consistent strengthening to the fur and smaller patches of over paint. The red fabric in the lower left hand corner is later and over painted, with a further l shaped patch of restoration just to the right of this. The paint is rather thin in places, particularly within the background, around his ear and the front part of his face in general. Rubbing to the edges of the panel. There is a nick to the surface at his right hand shoulder just above the red fabric and a small hole beneath this. Some more delicate re-touching within the robe which is evident by eye. There is a small horizontal scratch in his hair and a further very superficial surface scratch beneath this. Some cracquelure to the surface. Light surface dirt. There are two horizontal braces to the panel at the reverse. The panel is bowed.
