This work is in a relatively distressed condition and is in need to extensive restoration. There is a small patch of restoration the upper right hand side of his hat. The left hand side of his left hand side eye is re-painted. Minor re-touches elsewhere to the face and beard. General outlining and definition of decoration on the collar and plate beneath this has been strengthened. There are two patches of over painting/ restoration of damages at his shoulder which are approx 4 cms in diameter each and another more rectangular shaped patch just below the coat of arms. Three of his armored fingers are re-painted due to probable damage with a further 3-4 evident patches of restoration of varying sizes around the chest area. There is another patch to the lower left hand side edge and more delicate infilling to his right hand side arm. There is a further more significant horizontal patch of restoration in the lower left hand corner to repair a likely tear, running through the hand resting on the book and is approximately 2 cms in width and 15-20 cms in length. The over paint and restoration to this area and the fingers is apparently of different dates and there could be additional over painting of an earlier period which is not discernible. etc. The canvas is generally in a poor state of repair. It is extremely brittle and is lifting and cockelling away from the backing, most prominently in the upper right hand corner and right hand side edge. There are seemingly 3 + re-lines ? which is contributing to the general thickness and stiff and un wielding quality of the canvas. It is covered in a thick layer of dirt and highly discoloured varnish. There is significant old cracquelure in places, which is essentially stable, however there is patch above his left hand which is beginning to lift. The surface is generally uneven. There is numerous issues to this work. An opinion from a professional restorer will be available from the department after 23/11/16.
