Footnote:- George Nattrass was with 1st British Airborne Division when they were instructed to land in Arnhem, capture and hold the strategically important highway bridge, and hold the Germans at bay. On the 17th September 1944, George and his colleagues flew over to Holland in a glider and landed at Reijerskamp, near Wolfhese which was about 13 kilometers away from the bridge. They set off towards Oosterbeek and found themselves in the gardens of Hotel Dreijeroord which later became known as the White House and was to become the battalion headquarters. Fierce fighting with the Germans ensued and the British suffered many casualties. The King's Own Scottish Borderers battalion was reduced from 890 to 90 exhausted and hungry men and George was the only remaining senior sergeant left. On the 24th September, 26 year old George was unfortunately shot in the arm and leg by a German sniper and was subsequently captured and sent to Stalagg 11B, a Prisoner of War camp in Germany and then to Stalagg 357, where he remained until the end of the war.
