Laurence Stephen Lowry RA (1887-1976)
Caricature study of a dog

Provenance: James L. Brooke (1903-1973) (Huddersfield artist)
Gifted to his sister Gladys Brooke
Private Collection, North Yorkshire
Brooke and Lowry became friends during the 1960's when Brooke, who also worked as a paintings restorer, was asked to transversely split a piece of hardboard on which Lowry had painted on both sides. It was at this time that the two artists became friends and Lowry is known to have visited Huddersfield once a fortnight from then, brought by his wealthy friend and patron Alick Leggatt. He and Brooke produced oil paintings from Chapel Hill, Huddersfield, sitting side by side and having been commissioned by Huddersfield Council to do so.
