The painting is in fully resorted condition and has been relined, cleaned, restored and varnished in the 1920's or earlier. There is lifting paint with missing paint in places, these can be located in the drapery on the Madonna and near her fingers touching the blue drapes, with further areas of lifting paint on the Madonna's face and on the infant Christ's arm as well as further crackelure throughout. The original canvas has been torn in the blue drape and partially in the infant Christ's hand on the drape, this tear extends for approx. 9cm in a downwards direction and 7cm across. This has been partially filled and restored and this is now staring to deteriorate somewhat. There are scuff marks and scratches in various areas but there is also a great deal of dirt and discoloured varnish across most of the surface. It is contained within an early to mid 19th century elaborately decorated gilt plaster and wooden frame, the corners decorated with foliate scrolls and flowers, one or two small pieces of plaster are missing from the outer frame.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
