Rare Alexander Morton Carpet
Machine-made, probably by Templetons, Glasgow

The tomato red field with columns of stylised flowering plants enclosed by multiple narrow borders, 412cm by 268cm

This carpet was given by Alexander Morton to his cousin Margaret Morton Yeudall and her husband William Morton on 19th August 1903 on the occasion of their marriage.

Alexander Morton is rightly famed for producing many Arts & Crafts carpets of the early 20th century. Some of the best known were designed by Charles Voysey and sold in Liberty's department store in London's Regent Street. Morton produced other designs such as this example based on the carpets in the town of Ushak in Central Anatolia
Not Sold
Estimated at £600 - £800

Please note: the carpet was appraised from photographs only prior to publication of the catalogue. On physical inspection it was found to be machine made. The origin of the carpet is more likely to be Stoddarts or Templetons (both Scotland) where Morton worked. A saleroom notice to this effect, together with a revised estimate of £600-900 has been posted. The carpet is in good condition with thick pile. There ends are complete and the selvedges complete and original. 091115

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
