Both are quite dirty and do have discoloured varnish to the surface. There is a small damage on the second example which has been restored and this area of damage lies approx 7.5cm from the upper right corner and extends into the picture by 2.5cm. In certain lights the picture appears to have an area of missing paint which has been restored just above the sailing vessel on the left. This area is minimal and lies approx 11cm from the upper left corner of the work. A further small area of restoration camouflaging a scratch is in the sea to the right of the figures in the boat, this is approx 1.5cm long. The second example is a little scratched and scuffed in places with very small areas of missing paint in the sky above the boats on the right with some flaking and restored areas in the sea in the bottom right corner. There is dirt and discoloured varnish to the surface and both examples are contained within their original 19th century gilt plaster and wooden frames with inner gold leaf slips, one or two small pieces of plaster are missing from the frames which are cracking, and there slips are somewhat rubbed and dirty (210911)
