A Victorian Walnut Games Compendium, retailed by H Rodrigues, 42 Piccadilly, London, circa 1880, of domed rectangular form, the richly figured case with hinged lid (having chess board and backgammon folding board beneath), a plaque between the hinges with inscription (as above), with two frontal shelved doors revealing red and natural stained bone chess set, two lift out trays including cribbage board, red stained and natural bone draughts counters, six bezique markers, two sycamore dice shakers and three remaining bone dice, and two ivory hand and dial markers, the box 36cm wide, 19cm high

Sold for £450
Estimated at £500 - £700

The case with scratched vacant cartouche. There is a serious horizontal crack running round the lid, and some of the figuring has been painted to enhance it. Some chips to the angles of the boxes and doors. Some dry staining on the leading lip (when the doors are open), and on the edges. Requires some restorations. The chess set appears good throughout with just typical wear and tear and very minor flaking. Slight loss of the colour to the red stained set (scratching to the base where they fit onto metal pins). Two playing card sets are modern replacements which are in poor condition. Many of the draughts counters are dry, cracked and split. There is metal oxide damage to the cribbage board. Three bone dice are missing. The bezique cards are good with a little wear and tear where the hands have dug into the printed card details. The middle tray has lost its leather tab lift handle. The draughts board/backgammon set - the backgammon set has lifting leather detail on the field (simply needs regluing). It has stain and is lifting a little bit in the angles. The folding board is smiling due to warping. There is general scuffing and stress crack along the majority of the folding edge. Curving scuffing where the board is held in place beneath the lid by turning catches. One catch has lost its 'eye'. Sold a/f. 190511
