Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove (1790-1880) Dutch
View of a town with figures in conversation
Signed, oil on panel, 31cm by 47cm

Sold for £9,500
Estimated at £5,000 - £7,000

It appears to be in extremely good condition with some finer impasto in places and delicately applied brushwork in other areas. There are one or two areas of fly dirt to the surface but these are minimal. Contained within a good quality probably London made 1970/80's gilt plaster and wooden frame (141111) In remarkably good state of preservation with only a small amount of re-touching in the sky in the upper left corner and edge of picture. This is probably caused by the panel rubbing in the rebate of the old frame. Also there are several very small areas of re-touching in the lower right corner and again on the edge of the panel. There are three small spots of restoration on church roof on the right of the trees (171111)

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
