Circle of James Ward R.A. (18th/19th century)
A Horse Frightened by a Lightning Bolt, near a tree with a ruined house in the distance
Oil on canvas laid down onto panel, 17cm by 20.5cm

Animal painter and engraver, father of George Raphael Ward and brother of engraver William Ward. He was appointed painter and engraver in mezzotints to the Prince of Wales. In 1817 he gave up engraving for painting, imitating the work of George Morland, his brother-in-law. Later, under the influence of Stubbs, Gilpin and Rubens, he began to paint the romantic, dramatic animal pieces for which he is best known, such as Bulls Fighting and Fighting Horses etc. In 1815 he painted the monumental landscape Gordale Scar (Tate Gallery).

Sold for £1,100
Estimated at £750 - £850

The work has been laid down onto a wooden panel quite a long time ago and possibly restored in places. This restoration is minimal and very well camouflaged as the work now has a great deal of dirt, discoloured varnish and nicotine to the picture surface. There are also traces of hairs from the artist's brush in the paintwork in the sky, and the work is contained within a 1930s style gilt plaster and wooden moulding.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.

A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage people to see an item in person when possible.

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
