S....Whitcomb (19th century)
Harbour Scene with Fishing Boats, said to be Bridlington 1841
Inscribed verso together with the artist's signature, oil on canvas, 51cm by 66cm
Not Sold
Estimated at £600 - £800

In good original unlined condition, however, the work does have one or two small tears to the canvas, one is in the sky just to the left of centre and extends for 1.5cm, the other is a jagged tear in the stone quayside to the right of centre and extends for 3cm in a V shape pattern, with a further small tear to the left of the sail, this extends from left to right and is perhaps 1cm long. There is some lifting paint in the sky with paint shrinkage and crackelure as well as extensive areas of dirt and discoloured varnish in places. The work also has bloom in other areas. There is also a small indentation in the lower right hand corner just below the float in the water, there are also areas of thin pain leading me to think that it may have been cleaned approx 70-80 years ago. It is contained within its original Victorian elaborately decorated gilt plaster and wooden frame, one or two pieces of plaster are missing from the outer frame. (190510)

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.

A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage people to see an item in person when possible.

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
