Keith Hopewell (Contemporary)
"Part2ism, Vector Test 1 and 2"
Signed verso, spray paint on canvas, 20cm by 20cm (2)
Keith Hopewell was born in York (1972) and studied for a BA (First Class) and MA (Distinction) in Fine Art & Visual Culture at Wincester School of Art. As a multi-disciplinary artist, Hopewell explores a vast range of media in his practice and has been working with the spray paint medium for 40 years. Over this period, Hopewell has been a major influence on generations within aerosol related culture and the experimental hip-hop scene. Signed to the Ninja Tune/Big Dada label both with his group New Flesh and as a producer, Hopewell worked with Roots Manuva, TY, Anti Pop Consortium, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Saul Williams and Ramm:Ell:Zee. In the late 80's Hopewell became recognised as a pioneer of photorealism, mastering techniques with the only paint available at the time, automotive car spray paint. The essence of his painting practice today is located within the movement of the body in the act of performative time. Recent paintings focus on gestural compositions, non-representational form and process orientated concepts that explore the incorporation of sound and painting as a natural synaesthesia.
