According to a label affixed to the reverse, this is a rare proof of an early state before the one described by Wentworth (before additional work to face, eyes and to the hat and fur tippet) (Beraldi 19; Tissot 20; Wentworth 26); and Tissot's first portrait of Kathleen Newton

Cockling throughout the printed section of the sheet, with a larger undulation in the mid right of the lower portion of the jacket (see raking light photographs). A few areas of ridges in the paper - but these appear to be part of the structure of the paper rather than damage. Pale foxing spots throughout. Some darkening of the paper. A couple of tiny nicks to the face - the corner of the mouth and in the cheek - see image.
