John Thompson of Bradford (mid 19th century) Portrait of the Reverend John Walker, Wesleyan Minister, half length wearing a black jacket and white bow tie, reputedly painted April 7th 1848, extensively inscribed to stretcher verso, oil on canvas, 73cm by 60.5 (oval)

In overall fair to good condition. Original canvas. Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Stretcher shadows in evidence. Exaggerated widely spaced craquelure highly evident across his forehead, temples and bridge of nose. Less pronounced small to widely spaced craquelure throughout rest of surface - which is essentially stable. Deterioration to varnish in lower section, leading to opaque quality in parts. A few small retouches within background left hand side. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Provenance: From a private West Yorkshire based client
