Attributed to John Christian Schetky (1778-1874) H.M.S. Spartan, at anchor off Malta (c.1815) Watercolour, inscribed to reverse by repute, 34.5cm by 51.5cm Provenance: Omell Galleries, 1992 (unattributed) Private Collection, UK Schetky was professor of drawing at the Royal Naval College in Portsmouth from 1811 and would have seen HMS Spartan when it returned in 1814 after service in America. The frigate moved to the Mediterranean in 1815 at the end of the Napoleonic wars as Malta became the main British Naval base in the area. It is believed the present work shows the vessel at anchor off the Maltese coast. Various museums and galleries throughout the UK hold comparable examples by Schetky including the National Maritime Museum. See illustration
