William Callow, RWS (1812-1908)
"The Mouth of the River Early Morning"
Signed and dated 1837, watercolour with scratching out, 51cm by 72cm

William Rodman & Co. Belfast
Sotheby's 10.3.1988, Lot 89
Private Collection, UK

As this striking, atmospheric work is a possible exhibition piece, it is worth noting that in 1837- shortly before returning permanently to England from France - Callow won a silver medal at the first exhibition of the Societe des Amis des Arts Bologne -sur-Mer. As he wrote in his autobiography, "I was principally painting sea pieces at the time: they were quite a novelty in Paris, and I received many orders for them from Durand-Ruel."

Literature H.M Cundall (Editor), William Callow R.W.S., F.R.G.S: An Autobiography, Adam and Charles Black, London, 1908, p.63

Sold for £1,800
Estimated at £2,000 - £3,000

In a broadly good state of preservation, there is a relatively small amount of small-medium-sized sporadic foxing spots which are evident within the sky. There is a further patch of more concentrated and larger sized foxing spots mostly evident within the sea between the right-hand side rowing boat and the buoy. Colour depth is broadly in good order, although the red of the overcoat worn by the figure seated on the left-hand side ship shows a possible degree of reduction to colour. Some slight cockling in evidence, not examined out of the frame.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
