Travelling country folk in a Lakeland landscape
Oil on panel, 18.5cm by 25cm
Provenance: Christie's stencil verso PD912
Sold for £300
Estimated at £250 - £400
The panel has an additional fillet of wood at the right edge when looking from the reverse, slighty diagonal join - 1mm at top and 15mm wide at bottom. Old glue at the reverse. The panel has a very slight convex curvature. Old minro knocks to the back edges of the panel.
Finescale brittle age craquelure throughout, all flat and stable. A few old restored minor losses including to the top of the rocks at the top of the right edge, and in the sky top left corner. There has been some abrasion to the delicate paint layers, suppressed by a campaign of fairly careful retouching, some a little discoloured. This overpaint is slightly gritty and looks matt in reflected light. Further minor retouching to old marks etc. A little ingrained dirt and old varnish in the troughs of the paint and wood grain. It has been unevenly cleaned in past, with remnants of older varnish present in darker passages. A fairly glossy varnish. Light surface dirt.
