Circle of Francesco Zucarelli RA (1702-1788) Italian

Extensive Italiante landscape

Oil on canvas, 54.5cm by 83.5cm

Private Collection, UK

From mid-C18th onwards, Francesco Zuccarelli's arcadian landscapes became popular throughout Europe and particularly in England, where he lived for extended periods. However, while Zuccarelli remains one possible attribution so too does Giuseppe Zais (1709-1784), another talented Venetian landscape painter of the same period. Zais was relatively unknown in England, and the often close similarities in their work led over time to many of his paintings entering English collections as by Zuccarelli.

Not Sold

In restored condition, relines, cleaned, and revarnished. Some surface dirt and discolored varnish in evidence. Slight stretcher shadow, surface lightly flattened from the restoration process. Varying-sized stable craquelure throughout. Evidence of retouching and restoration throughout the sky which is broadly more concentrated in four to five patches on the left-hand side. The rocks to the far distance are fairly flat in appearance and may have received a more consistent level of treatment with further general strengthening through the darker tones of the rocky outcrop within the foreground and strengthening to the detailing such as the wooden struts of the bridge. The outline of the centrally positioned tree and parts of the darker tones of the foliage has been retouched or strengthened with further general strengthening to the lower right foreground. Some of the very fine darker tones and definition in and around the figure group is likely added but the view of the lake and landscape beyond remains more intact. Otherwise in a stable and good state of presentation.
