  Lot 1038

1038

Attributed to Michael Dahl (1659–1743) Swedish
Portrait of a gentleman, half length, wearing a powdered wig, red cloak and white cravat, in a feigned oval
Oil on canvas, 74.5cm by 62.5cm

Sold for £1,800
Estimated at £1,200 - £1,800

Relined, covered in a thick layer of discoloured dirt and varnish. Cluster of white coloured drips, mostly within background left-hand side and also slightly extending into his powdered wig and down his left-hand shoulder. These would appear to be easily removable. T-shaped tear to canvas, just right of his head (see images) which is approx 5cm in length on the horizontal and vertical damage. Small retouch to lower left-hand corner and some general strengthening to the shadows and definition of lower drapery left of centre. Other small amount of effectively delicate retouching within his hairline above his right-hand side-eye and possibly the other minor retouch elsewhere. Minor rubbings and abrasions to outer edges, pin mark above head approx centre, canvas slightly buckling to upper edges. Otherwise in a stable state of preservation.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
