  Lot 1044

1044

An Ivory Cased Portable Diptych Sundial, probably by Charles Bloud, circa 1680, of rectangular form, the hinged cover with engraved dial, the inside with pewter lunar volvelle and rotating disk and with silvered compass rose with elliptical scale, the base with volvelle engraved with a perpetual calendar, 8.5cm by 8cm

With purchase receipt from E T Biggs & Sons Ltd, dated 16 December 1955

This type of magnetic azimuth dial was specific to makers in Dieppe in the latter half of the 17th century, and is purported to have been designed by Charles Bloud. The principle by which these sundials works is based on a variation in the magnetic declination of the area around Dieppe which existed for only a short period of time in the 17th century, beginning about 1666. Similar examples are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Science Museum in London, and Snowshill Manor in Gloucestershire (National Trust)

Sold for £1,600
Estimated at £1,500 - £2,000

Needle and glass lacking. Top leaf warped. Triangle of ivory lacking from the right hand side. Expected discoloration and some very minimal age related cracks.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
