1045

Circle of Michael Dahl (1659-1743) Swedish
Portrait of a gentleman, head and shoulders, wearing a powdered wig and armour, thought to be of Arnold Joost van Keppel, first Earl of Albemarle (1669-1718)
Oil on canvas, 59.5cm by 49cm

Sold for £2,500
Estimated at £800 - £1,200

In fully restored condition. Relined cleaned and revarnished. Consistent retouching and overpainting to both upper corners with evidence of an old feigned oval (not likely to be an extension). Furthermore sporadic retouching and strengthening around right-hand side outline around gentlemens s powdered wig. Cluster of small-sized retouches within background and left-hand side edge above his right-hand side shoulder with two further patches immediately left of his right-hand side arm approx 1cm in length. There are two sizeable areas of old retouching/restoration within the lower part of his right-hand sidearm and armour and through and across his right-hand side shoulder which becomes less pronounced but extends across his chest and below his collar. This is now perceptible by eye and is markedly different to surrounding areas of paint in that it has a chalky and deterioated quality. Further general strengthening within background above sitters left-hand side shoulder and odd touch within his attire on his left. Small retouches to nostrils, most of the mentioned areas of retouching can be seen by eye and have the same milky surface quality. Some minor rubbing to outer edges in general, light surface dirt. Areas of varying sized stable cracquelure. Paint very slightly thin in places i.e. parts of his hair. Otherwise in an overall stable state of preservation.
