  Lot 1053

1053

Dutch School (17th century)
Bearded gentleman wearing a fur-trimmed cloak and a red hat standing before a frozen landscape and holding a brazier with various figures and skaters beyond
Oil on canvas, 102cm by 89cm

Not Sold

In fully restored condition. Relined, cleaned and revarnished. Surface possibly slightly flattened by the restoration process but remains reasonable. Pretty consistent retouching and overpainting throughout background. Retouching through the gentleman's hat, around the shadows and defintions of his eyes and also fairly consistently throughout his beard. The handle outline and defintion of the brazier including the lower half right hand side has been retouched and strengthened. The outline of the gentleman's shoulders and back has been strengthened as have many of the darker tones, folds, creases and decoration within his robe. The vignette landscape lower right hand side appears to be broadly less effected although the roof and spires of the church show signs of intervention. There is little indication of later paint to denote the gentleman's hands but may still have received some general treatment. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish. The odd very superficial scuffs/imperfections. Areas of varying sized stable craquelure.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
