In an overall good and original state of preservation. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Possible small repair to reverse of canvas (approx. 5cm left of printed canvas details and 6cm from stretcher edge roughly centre of canvas and approx. 0.5cm across with associated small retouch to surface of canvas immediately right of the standing figure's cuff. Minor rubbing/abrasion lower right hand side edge and elsewhere. Tiny pin hole lower right hand side edge approx. 6cm above signature and date. Tiny horizontal nick to surface approx. 1cm from upper edge and 10cm across from upper left hand corner no more than 0.5cm in length.

Auction: The TB & R Jordan Collection, 15th Jul, 2023
Tom and Rosamund Jordan were leading specialists in the Staithes Group of painters for over 40 years.
In the late 19th and early 20th century, the tiny, picturesque fishing village of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast became host to a colony of artists, attracted to the area by the towering cliffs, stormy seas, the clarity of light and eminently paintable cottages and harbours. The Staithes School artists were greatly inspired by the French Impressionists, working en plein air to capture fleeting moments of light, air, and water, albeit with an edge of harder, northern grit.
The Jordans, who were equally passionate about Staithes, were champions of this pioneering group of artists, and over 100 works from their collection will be offered in this sale, including works by a Mark Senior, Owen Bowen, Arthur A. Friedenson and Frank Henry Mason.
Part II of their collection will be sold at a later date.
