Follower of Jan van Os (1744-1808) Dutch

Still life of a garland of flowers

Oil on slate, 54cm by 41cm

It has been suggested that this maybe the product of one of the artists associated with the firm Jennens and Betteridge (1816-1870), or a porcelain painter from a similar period. Contained in a highly decorative gilt and carved wood frame (damaged)

Sold for £420
Estimated at £300 - £500

Glazed. Covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. The varnish is deteriorating in areas and is emphasising an opaque quality in some of the areas of paint which also has a slightly pitted quality in part - most notably around the burgundy flower toward lower right of arrangement, the orange flower to the left of this and generally below the flowers. Some small losses within the petal of the lowest orange flower mostly upper right hand side. Further 4-5 small losses within the petals of the cream flower above and left of the aformentioned orange flower mostly on the right hand side. The fine craquelure evident elsewhere is essentially stable but maybe at risk of lifting and is contributing to a slightly pitted appearance in conjuction with the deteriorating varnish. More pronounced and widely spaced craquelure/varnish seperation to lower right hand corner with the odd less notable small loss/imperfection to surface elsewhere. The delicate frame has several losses and is in a precarious state in general. Images of the craquelure and pitting can be provided. For more information please contact department.

Auction: British, European and Sporting Art, 16th Jul, 2022

'In a Ligurian Garden', an important lost work by Henry Herbert La Thangue, is to be sold in the British, European and Sporting Art Sale on 16th July with an estimate of £70,000-100,000 plus buyer's premium. The painting was recently rediscovered in Yorkshire, having been passed down through the family of Sir William Prince-Smith (1898-1964) and his wife Marjorie, manufacturers of textile machinery from Keighley, West Yorkshire.  View lot

Henry Herbert La Thangue RA (1859-1929) was one of the leading exponents of British Impressionism, who had become enamoured with painting 'en plein air' on a youthful painting trip to Brittany in 1881 with friend and fellow artist Stanhope Forbes, one of the founders of the Newlyn School of Painters. On his return to England he settled in Sussex, painting farm labourers in idyllic, rustic surroundings, recording a way of English rural life that was fast being lost to increasing industrialisation.
