Original canvas. Small loss to upper edge (see image). Pin holes to upper corners with further small loss to upper left hand corner. Stretcher shadow. Craquelure across surface which is more pronounced in certain areas, for example lower right hand corner and within stretcher upright right hand side. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Canvas slightly adrift. Retouching to vertical right hand side stretched shadow which is slightly discoloured and evident. Less visible and prominent retouching to upper horizontal stretcher shadow. Some fine and sporadic retouching and infilling to craquelure to the body of the horse. Some possible strengthening to definition and outline of the standing gentleman's attire. Some possible strengthening through green of the landscape. Three vertical lines of differing lengths to landscape between the head of the standing gentleman and the nose of the horse, and another immedately above the hind legs of the horse, which appear incongruous but are seemingly by design. Overall appearance of image somewhat flat. Otherwise in a generally presentable state of preservation.
