a) "The Grand Canal"
Unlined, some old tears to original tacking margins at reverse. All keys present, slightly lacking in tension. one small distortion bottom right corner, and one to the bottom centre from objects trapped behind stretcher (see images in raking light). The latter has associated sharp cracking. An extensive network of slightly raised brittle age and impact cracks, and stretcher bar marks throughout the sky. Further cracking in the buildings and water is not elevated. All secure with the exception with a 1.5 inch horizontal crack in the sky which is sharp and lifting slightly. One tiny shallow dent and associated loss in the middle of the canal. A slightly raised curving distortion to the canvas from a blow from the reverse 3 inches long through the middle of the canal into the buildings (see image in raking light). A few further tiny old losses, restored. A few tiny touches of very minor overpaint for example in a long line in the sky. Selectively cleaned in the pat, with remnants of an old varnish in places. Glossy, even varnish not appreciably discoloured. Light surface dirt and a few minor surface accretions.
b) Venice Canal
Loose/strip lined - the lining canvas is adhered to the original canvas at the edges, but is loose over the back of the canvas. All keys present, good tension. Network of brittle age and impact craquelure throughout, more prominent and very slightly raised in the sky. Two long curving diagonal curving raised impact marks (see images in raking light). Cracking stable. Several tiny scattered restored losses, including one just off the end of the wooden jetty, one just above the figure standing on the ball on the roofline, bottom right corner, and centre bottom edge. Further tiny scattered touches of overpaint. Selectively cleaned in the past, remnants of old varnish. Even glossy varnish, light surface dirt and accetions.

Auction: British, European & Sporting Art, 16th Nov, 2024
The Autumn British, European and Sporting Art Sale will include a sun-drenched work by British Impressionist painter Dorothea Sharp, two works by Louis H Grimshaw consigned from a private collection, and notable genre pieces by the likes of Giovanni Battista Torriglia and Charles Spencelayh.
A good offering of figural works include a male figure attributed to York-born artist William Etty, and 17th and 18th century portraits, and amongst the Sporting art are examples of the work of Robert Nightingale and Wright Barker.
The sale will go on view to the public from Sunday 10th November, alongside The Selected Contents of Bell Hall, Naburn, York, which will also offer a broad range of traditional and contemporary paintings.
