French Colonies: Syria

Specialised collection on quadrille pages in a binder, with several hundred mint and used stamps 1919 first issues to 1940. Many errors and varieties here including double and inverted ovpts, omitted lines of ovpt se-tenant, etc. Some of the better items are (mint unless otherwise stated) 1919 20pi on 5fr blue and buff (SG.20, cat. £350), the same value with thick O.M.F. type in black and red, latter signed Brun (SG.29/30, cat. £470), rosette ovpt 10pi on 40cts MNH, tips of a few perfs toned (SG.53A, cat. £130), double black rosettes 20cts on 1ct block of four and double red rosette 10pi on 40cts (both toned), 1920 airmail ovpts set used (SG.57/59, cat. £275), 1921 regular set mint and inverted ovpts, 1921 airmails used (SG.86/88, cat. £200), through to 1923 'Syrie-Grand Liban' airmail set (SG.114/117, cat. £225), 1924 June and September ovpts on Olympics sets, 1924 refugee aid airmails with 5p on 10p 'au' for 'aux' (SG.211, cat. £110), etc, as well as good 1930s sets including the 1930-36 views with top two values MNH, 1934 Republic first set with airmails (SG.271/299, cat. £650) also with proofs with blank value tablets of the Parliament House design in the colour of the 75cts and el Maari in colour of the 6p. Some earlier issues toned as usual, especially the printings on 'G.C.' paper as to be expected. STC £5,600+ not including varieties.

Highlights include a specialised collection of St. Helena stamps and postal history, and a very extensive and impressive holding of Russian postal history with a particular focus on the Post Offices Abroad. The latter collector’s interests also extended through the Baltics to excellent Scandinavian Locals, as well as around the Eastern Mediterranean from the Balkans to Palestine and Egypt.
Amongst the postcards offered in the sale are fantastic albums from a dedicated collector, of high-quality and comprehensively assembled, which include transport related cards of Leeds, Skipton, Lancaster, Teesside and Middlesbrough as well as excellent general Yorkshire cards.
