Wooden gesso frames have various splits with the odd loss and some edges of a precarious nature. All four in fully restored condition fairly stiffly relined, cleaned, and revarnished. The paint is thin and the surface is flattened as a result of the restoration process. Example with three huntsman and fallen tree trunk to lower right-hand corner, likely two courses of restoration, general retouching to edges. The bay horse with huntsman wearing a red jacket to the left-hand side has a repainted head, general retouching and strengthening through the four legs, saddle, belly and ears in addition to the rider's hat and hands. A similar level of retouching and re-strengthening can be found to the horse to the left of this. General retouching and strengthening can be seen throughout the foreground on the left-hand side with a more consistent essentially vertical band below and behind the repainted horses head approximately 5 by 12 cm overall. There is further retouching all be it less consistently around the legs of the grey trotting horse and in around the pack of hounds in front of them. Further retouching and strengthening probably of two phases more consistently within the foliage to the tree on the right and to a lesser extent within the foliage of the tree within the left. Further retouches throughout background and sky. Odd superficial surface scratch around centre and elsewhere.

On the scent, fairly stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. The surface is somewhat flattened as part of the restoration process. Circa 40-60% of the sky and background show general strengthening and overpainting with evidence of consistent infilling to large-sized cracquelure throughout. A similar degree of strengthening and infilling can be found through the foreground including horses, riders, dogs etc. Possible vertical tear with associated restoration in line with the horse and rider right-hand side, back and approximately 6cm in length covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Paint thin in places, cracquelure still apparent. Minor rubbings and abrasions to edges.

The Kill, fairly stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. Surface is somewhat flattened by the restoration process. Possible damage with associated restoration and repair around right-hand side cloud towards upper right-hand corner approximately 6 cm in diameter. Some general infilling to old cracquelure throughout. General strengthening to foliage of tree right-hand side and to a lesser extent the more prominent tree on the left. The tail of the horse on the far right, the hat of the rider, his boots, and to a lesser extent the mane of the horse and to a lesser extent the forelocks have been overpainted or strengthened. The general outline front legs and rider of the central figure has been strengthened with further less consistent areas of retouching to stretcher shadow, the group of hounds and elsewhere. Paint slightly thin in places, surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Varying sized cracquelure, minor rubbings and abrasions to edges.

The final work, fairly stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. General retouching through upper right-hand side edge, upper right-hand corner, upper left-hand corner, right-hand side centre and towards lower right-hand side corner. Sporadic and more delicate retouches and infilling elsewhere with generally less intervention compared to the former examples. Approx three vertical lines of infilling above riders and trees roughly 6-7cm in length. Surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Minor rubbings/abrasions to edges. Very superficial surface scratch, varying sized cracquelure in evidence etc. For more information please contact the department.
