The Russian paintings produced by the artist date from the artist's visit to Russia prior to the first world war. It has been suggested that his visit to Russia and exposure to weather conditions hastened his early death in 1918.

On the Outskirts of Moscow - Stable panel, light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. There is little to easily discern by way of retouching under a UV light. Otherwise in a good and presentable state of preservation.
Village - Small amount of potentially linear and sporadic retouches along the lower edge, slightly more concentrated to left-hand corner. Minor retouch to upper right corner with slightly larger linear retouch along upper edge right of centre, approx 1cm in length. Odd sporadic retouch elsewhere to sky and foreground. Light surface and discoloured varnish. "Jackson" part of signature, slightly indistinct. Otherwise in a good and presentable state of preservation.

Auction: The TB & R Jordan Collection, 15th Jul, 2023
Tom and Rosamund Jordan were leading specialists in the Staithes Group of painters for over 40 years.
In the late 19th and early 20th century, the tiny, picturesque fishing village of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast became host to a colony of artists, attracted to the area by the towering cliffs, stormy seas, the clarity of light and eminently paintable cottages and harbours. The Staithes School artists were greatly inspired by the French Impressionists, working en plein air to capture fleeting moments of light, air, and water, albeit with an edge of harder, northern grit.
The Jordans, who were equally passionate about Staithes, were champions of this pioneering group of artists, and over 100 works from their collection will be offered in this sale, including works by a Mark Senior, Owen Bowen, Arthur A. Friedenson and Frank Henry Mason.
Part II of their collection will be sold at a later date.
