Johann Bernard Klombeck (1815-1893) Dutch and Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven (1798-1881) Belgian
Cattle, Sheep and herdswoman on a country track before a distant tower, in an Italianate landscape
Signed, oil on canvas, 90.5cm by 123cm

This earthy agrarian and idyllic Italianate landscape is a picture born from a collaborative effort between Johann Bernard Klombeck and Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven, two painters at the height of their careers.

Klombeck studied in Kleve and became a leading member of the Romantic school subscribing to romantic motifs of painting follies, ruins, towering trees, and man fighting the elements of nature. It is supposed that Klombeck was first introduced to Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven in 1856 and would often collaborate thereon after leaving behind a fine portfolio of landscapes, namely Wooded Landscape (1869) in the collection of Leeds Art Gallery. Verboeckhoven was one of the foremost animal painters of the 19th century and he painted people and animals with equal attention to detail and character. This picture is a fine example of Klombeck’s and Verboeckhoven’s collaboration.

In fully restored condition. Fairly stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. There are approx. 6-8 small and varying shaped areas of retouching and infilling within the sky to upper right corner. Further less visible under UV sporadic, small sized retouches to sky of upper left corner. Possibly some general strengthening to the lower areas of sky left hand side. Fairly sporadic retouches and strengthening to darker tones and shadows of foliage in lower left hand corner, parts of the canopy of trees, below the castle and further retouches to presumably old flaked paint across the body of the cow. The herdswoman and other animals would appear to be mostly without intervention and there is a similar degree of infilling/retouches to shadows and definition within the foliage of the lower right hand corner to that scene in the lower left. Any retouches to the foliage of the large upright trees is more sporadic. Some general retouching to edges (mostly lower edge, lower outline of the rocks to centre of foreground and odd retouch elsewere) etc... Some slight flattening to the surface as a result of the restoration process. The canvas is slightly adrift of the frame and slip to lower edge.
