1078

Dutch School in the 17th Century Style
Trompe-l'œil tavern scene with figures
Oil on canvas, 73.5cm by 55.5cm

Sold for £2,800
Estimated at £300 - £500

Lined onto a coarse canvas. All keys present, a little lacking in tension. Stretcher splitting at the bottom member and the bottom of the left member. Original canvas coarse. Brittle age craquelure throughout, raised and cupped leaving an uneven surface - see reflected light images. Scattered losses throughout, with more than one campaign of restoration - only the later campaign visible in ultraviolet light as it sits above an old degraded natural resin varnish. Larger restored losses include a network through the end of the barrel (possibly old tears), a three-inch loss or possible old tear running up from the bottom edge mid right. A ban in a horizontal line across the picture, through the striped and red drapery, to the centre of the turned-back canvas. It is difficult to see the extent of the losses in the dark areas due to the degraded varnish. Some abrasion to the upper paint layers, particuarly around the areas of raised paint and old flaking, for example between the faux stretcher bars. Ingrained dirt and old varnish. Upper slightly yellowed varnish, degraded. Light surface dirt with some minor scuffs and scratches.
