Taxidermy: North American Wapiti or Elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni), circa 1886, Wyoming, USA, a monumental adult bull shoulder mount looking straight ahead, 13 points (6+7), Boone & Crockett Score 418-7/8", Length 59-1/8", Circum 8-1/4", Spread 53", Weight 50lbs - 6ozs, from the wall 51- 1/2", height 82-3/4", mounted upon a large high quality shaped shield. Taken by J.G. Millais, Wyoming, USA, 1886, entered in the 1st Boone & Crockett Book, "North American Records of Big Game", 1932. Then re-entered in the 9th edition of the Boone & Crockett records in 1988, ranked five. Gets a special mention in the book "America Elk", retrospective 2010, ranked 4th in the top ten oldest Elk on record, current rank 9th, circa 2013.
Provenance: Ex-Lot 854, "The Kenneth Whitehead Deer Collection", Tennants auction 21st July 2005. Previously purchased as antlers on shield, converted to a shoulder mount by Stuart Jefferies taxidermy Scotland, shield and fittings by Raymond Hutchison.
Annie recalls - "Ray wanted this head ever since he was a little boy when he first read about it, he was thrilled that it was for sale and was determined to aquire it by almost any means !, it was an exremely exciting and tense sale with just two bidders , Ray being one of them, bidding furiously, the silence was deafening, everyone in the room held their breath, Ray got it and achieved a lifelong dream that day".
