Stephen Lewin (c.1822-c.1912)
"Hard to Convince"
Signed and dated (18)90, oil on canvas, 93.5cm by 65.5cm
Sold for £850
Estimated at £800 - £1,200
In fully restored condition. Slightly stiffly relines cleaned and re-varnished. The surface is slightly flattened as a result of the restoration process. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. There is very little to discern in the way of restoration or overpainting following inspection under UV light but this does not preclude the possibility of the varnish preventing visibility. No obvious or significant areas of later paint by eye. A series of tiny nicks to canvas along the gentleman's left-hand side thigh seated on the right-hand side with the odd other further tiny loss or nick to surface elsewhere.
