Joseph Walter West (1860-1933)
"Thus Spring came stealing up expectant valleys, early morning Rievaulx"
Monogrammed, with original artist's inscribed label attached verso, oil on canvas, 70.5cm by 90.5cm

Exhibited: New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition 1925, according to inscriptions and labels to reverse

Sold for £600
Estimated at £600 - £900

Slightly stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. The surface is slightly flattened and the paint has slightly thinned in places as a result of the restoration process, although some impasto is retained. Fine craquelure throughout but more notably to sky, with odd small area slightly more pronounced (see images). A degree of surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. Fairly sporadic retouching of varying sizes throughout sky, somewhat more concentrated top upper left hand corner and along horizon right hand side (see images). Further retouching and strengthening to triangular area in lower left hand corner, which is approximately 30cm on longest side. Sporadic small-scale retouches within the water and the land of the central and lower right hand side area and more sporadically extending from the more concentrated patch on the lower left hand corner, essentially along lower edge to roughly central point. Minimal, less notable retouches to other parts. Some of the structure and branches of the trees, especially on the left hand side and central area, are possibly strengthened, in addition to the roof of the building far right and some of the masonry and architecture in general, etc. Otherwise in a stable and presentable state of preservation.

On the Kentish Downs by Algernon Cecil Newton is one of the highlights of the British, European and Sporting Art Sale on 11th November. On offer with an estimate of £8,000-12,000 (plus buyer’s premium), the picture is a fine example of Newton’s quiet yet poetic landscapes.

Further highlights include Eugene Galien-Laloue’s Paris, Winter Fruit Stalls of 1910, and “The Engagement Ring” by Arthur Claude Cooke, which was exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1901. Also of note in the sale is Lady Electra Being Led by a Groom by Lionel Edwards.

The sale will also include a Private Collection of works by Myles Birkett Foster and George Weatherill, and the last remaining paintings from the T.B. & R. Jordan Collection of Staithes Artists.
