Henry Bright (1810-1873)
Cattle watering beside Abbey ruins
Signed, oil on canvas, 43cm by 69cm, with arched top corners

Sold for £280
Estimated at £300 - £500

In fully restored condition, relined, cleaned and revarnished. General surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. Fairly stiffly relined, surface is slightly flattened and the paint is thin in places as a result of the restoration process. Areas of fine stable cracquelure. The pinky tones within the wispy clouds along the upper edge are later. Patch of general retouching within sky immediately above mountains upper right-hand corner, the largest being approx 3cm by 6cm overall although it is not uniform. Further sporadic and delicate infilling within sky to restore old cracquelure, likley strengthening to some of the darker tones and shadows present within the foliage within the trees left-hand side and to a lesser extent within the more shadowy foliage immediately right of this and moving towards the centre of the composition including architectural features in this area. The building a spire centrally placed on the horizon line in addition to the foliage on the right-hand side of the painting also shows evidence of likley intervention. The rocks towards the lower right-hand corner have minor dashes of strengthening to elements of the definition. In addition to other more minor parts of the foreground. Varying sized areas of cracquelure most evident within the sky.

Auction: British, European and Sporting Art, 16th Jul, 2022

'In a Ligurian Garden', an important lost work by Henry Herbert La Thangue, is to be sold in the British, European and Sporting Art Sale on 16th July with an estimate of £70,000-100,000 plus buyer's premium. The painting was recently rediscovered in Yorkshire, having been passed down through the family of Sir William Prince-Smith (1898-1964) and his wife Marjorie, manufacturers of textile machinery from Keighley, West Yorkshire.  View lot

Henry Herbert La Thangue RA (1859-1929) was one of the leading exponents of British Impressionism, who had become enamoured with painting 'en plein air' on a youthful painting trip to Brittany in 1881 with friend and fellow artist Stanhope Forbes, one of the founders of the Newlyn School of Painters. On his return to England he settled in Sussex, painting farm labourers in idyllic, rustic surroundings, recording a way of English rural life that was fast being lost to increasing industrialisation.
