Lot 1097

1097

Alfred Augustus Glendening Snr. (1840-1921)
Sheep in summer pasture with figure at rest
Signed, oil on canvas, 49.5cm by 75.5cm

It has been suggested that this work was painted after 1909. The scene is probably Amberly Chalk Pit, East Sussex to the distance with the River Cuckmere in the valley.

We are grateful to David Coulthard and Alice Munro-Faure of the Glendening Project for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.

Sold for £1,100
Estimated at £1,200 - £1,800

Unlined. One key missing, fair tension. Slight stretcher bar marks top edge. Brittle age craquelure and impact cracks in places. Some just starting to lift but currently appear secure, particularly around the middle left of the sky (see raking light image). A few minor areas of stable drying cracks. Possibly a little retouching to the abrasion in the delicate mid browns in the trees. Minor scuffs and damages at the edges from contact with the frame. Even, glossy varnish not appreciably discoloured. Light surface dirt.
