Old reline, cleaned and revarnished. The surface is somewhat flattened and the paint is somewhat thin in places as a result of the restoration process. Some lightly strengthening through the background with more concentrated patch at top of canvas approx 2cm at the widest point and 5cm in length. Approx 3-4 smaller retouches at his right shoulder and upper right of his laced cravat within his jacket. Further patch of retouching around the tip of his thumb approx 1 by 1cm. Another small patch or dash immediately above his first finger, outline and shadows around all fingers generally strengthened. Sporadic retouches of various lengths within lower curve and one or two more minor bits of infilling within background etc. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish, slight stretcher shadow. Very small white surface mark at the edge of his right cheek, much of the retouching has discoloured and is evident by eye. Varnish generally has a somewhat opaque quality.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
