1106

Johann Nepomuk Mayrhofer (1764-1832) Austrian
A still life of variegated Tulips, Narcissus, Roses and Convolvulus arranged in a wicker basket on a stone ledge with butterflies feeding and in the surrounding
Initialled, oil on canvas, 44cm by 36.5cm

Mayrhofer, whose work often reveals the influence of early Dutch masters such as Ambrosius Bosschaert, was highly regarded in his time for fruit and flower pieces which, according to The Dictionary of 19th Century Austrian Painters, ‘he managed to render with great realism and an extraordinary freshness in the colours thanks to his great technical skills’.

Sold for £2,000
Estimated at £1,000 - £1,500

In fully restored condition, relined, cleaned and revarnished. The brown to rust coloured butterfly at the top of the arrangement is likely strengthened throughout. The dark green and shadowy leaves approx. 1/3 down of the arragnement on the left hand side have likely been strengthened as have some of the corresponding dark green silohuettes of foliage between Delphiniums and the prominent Tulip forming the finial of the display. The upper right hand side of the monogram on the horizonal has been delicately retouched. There are approx. 3 tiny retouches within the outer petals of the prominent central pink Rose laid on the stone top and within the leaf right and below of this. There is little further to discern under a UV light but it does not exclude the possiblity of further considered intervention - for example there is a subtle but slightly incongrous looking essentialy rectangular patch of darker paint at the tip of the delicate sprig on the right hand side of the decoration and detailing to denote the dark purple Tulip on the right hand side which could have also recvied a degree of restoration. A band of medium sized craquelure to centre of stone ledge which is beginning to show signs of lifting. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish.
