Attributed to John Frederick Herring Snr. (1795-1865) At the start, c.1830 Pencil and watercolour, 32cm by 46cm It is possible that this work depicts the start of the St. Leger in 1830. The winner of said race ''Birmingham'' was painted by Herring in 1830 and also engraved. The horse and jockey on the far right of the present composition match the colours for Birmingham and its jockey Patrick Connolly, including his distinctive mutton chop sideburns. The depicted weather conditions are consistent with the famously stormy circumstances of the St Leger in 1830. There are further similarities between the second place winner at the 1830 St. Leger - ''Priam'' and the jockey colours worn by the centre back figure.
