1124

Follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller Bt. (1646-1723)
Portrait of a young gentleman (possibly a Parliamentarian officer), half length, wearing an armoured breastplate and a powdered wig
Oil on canvas, 72.5cm by 60cm

Sold for £650
Estimated at £700 - £1,000

Old reline, cleaned and revarnished. Now covered in a fairly thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Patch of retouching and overpainting to upper left hand corner which is effectively oval in shape and is approx. 2x5cm overall. Some likely strengthening through background in general. The general outline of the sitter's powdered wig shows evidence of retouching and stregnthing with further relatively isolated and linear strengthening to define some of the curls to his wig. His pupils, shadows around his left eye (moreso than the right), the bridge of his nose, definition of nostrils, inner side of left cheek and shadowy parts of chin all show signs of retouching or strengthening in addition to outline of neck area to his right hand side and shadow below his white stock at left hand side and further fairly sporadic enhancement of shadows and definition within his costume. Slight stretcher shadow. Areas of essentially fine stable craquelure around the right hand outline of his face, lower parts of his hair to left hand side and through and across parts of his armour which is emphasised by the deteriorated nature of the varnish but all effectively stable. A few tiny losses within background towards upper left hand corner of a slightly diagonal abrasion. Odd minor surface imperfection elsewhere consistent with age etc...

Auction: British, European and Sporting Art, 16th Jul, 2022

'In a Ligurian Garden', an important lost work by Henry Herbert La Thangue, is to be sold in the British, European and Sporting Art Sale on 16th July with an estimate of £70,000-100,000 plus buyer's premium. The painting was recently rediscovered in Yorkshire, having been passed down through the family of Sir William Prince-Smith (1898-1964) and his wife Marjorie, manufacturers of textile machinery from Keighley, West Yorkshire.  View lot

Henry Herbert La Thangue RA (1859-1929) was one of the leading exponents of British Impressionism, who had become enamoured with painting 'en plein air' on a youthful painting trip to Brittany in 1881 with friend and fellow artist Stanhope Forbes, one of the founders of the Newlyn School of Painters. On his return to England he settled in Sussex, painting farm labourers in idyllic, rustic surroundings, recording a way of English rural life that was fast being lost to increasing industrialisation.
