Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky was a wealthy Berlin-based businessman. In 1741 Frederick II of Prussia instructed Gotzkowsky and his brother to travel to the porcelain factory at Meissen and commission a magnificent table service for the Royal Court. Frederick did not want Augustus II, Elector of Saxony and his rival in the First Silesian War 1740-42, to find out for whom the noble crockery was intended. For this reason, the service was ordered under the Gotzkowsky name leading to the Meissen factory referring to this mould of pattern as Gotzkowsky Erhabene Blumen
