Edward John Cobbett (1815-1899)
"The Fern Gatherers"
Signed and dated 1868, oil on canvas, 89cm by 94.5cm

Not Sold

In restored condition. Relined, cleaned and revarnished. Paint is possibly slightly thin in some place i.e central figures green jacket but it retains a good level of original impasto and brushwork. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. Areas of varying sized stable craquelure. Some general retouching and strengthening throughout the sky which is slightly more consistent on the left hand side although the upper right hand corner and the area immediately above the horizon between the right hand side two figures and outer edge displays more concentrated treatment. The foreground equally has received a relatively consistent amount of retouching and infilling to strengthen definition and shadows particularly within the vegetation and rocks. More notable areas of restoration within the figure groups include the strengthening of the darker shadows wihin the red cloak and skirts of the far right standing figure. The neck and chest area of the central standing figure and general outline and shadows in and around the hat and face of the standing left hand figure (other less sizeable retouches can be found elsewhere and throughout).
