  Lot 1160

1160

British School (18th Century)
Portrait of John Goodricke Bart (by repute, presumed to be 5th Baronet), head and shoulders, wearing a short powdered wig, standing before an architectural pillar and a classical roundel relief
Oil on canvas, 72.5cm by 62cm

Sold for £380
Estimated at £400 - £600

The painting is lined, all keys present, slightly slack tension. There is a quantity of debris behind the bottom stretcher. Original tacking margins removed, as can be seen at the face where they are exposed inside the frame sight. There are old associated retouched losses, and overpaint extends the natural edge of the paint in places.

There a finescale and a largescale network of brittle age and impact craquelure throughout, with large passages of lifting and active flaking, particularly to the right through the arm and cloak and to the left side of the head and ajacent background. These area have had a history of flaking and loss, and older losses are filled and retouched. Newer losses are unretouched. The retouching is matte in places. In the rest of the painting, the cracks are lifting slightly and there are scattered further smaller losses, some retouched.

There are thick old varnish layers, yellowed and fairly opaque so difficult to see if there is further overpaint in the background. There are patches of a thick gritty material to the left lapel, to the left lower edge, and in the top right corner.

Scattered scuffs and surface abrasions, and a patchy, uneven surface gloss. There is a thick layer of surface dirt and dark scattered accretions.

Auction: British, European & Sporting Art, 16th Mar, 2024

Coming up for auction this Spring are three notable works by Adolphe Valette (1876-1942), a French Impressionist artist who spent the majority of his career in the North of England. Whilst he is best remembered today as being the highly influential tutor to L.S. Lowry, Valette created a significant body of work in oils, watercolours and drawing media. All three works are sold with provenance from The Perera Collection, the largest collection of works by Valette to have been assembled in private hands.

Further notable works in the sale include an exquisitely detailed still life of a peach, black grapes and cobnuts on a marble shelf by Emilie Preyer (1849-1930), and a work by historical genre painter Edward Matthew Ward (1816-1879) that depicts the hero of a popular comic ballad, John Gilpin.

The sale will also see the final part of the Raymond Booth Studio, comprising 19 works. Raymond Booth (1929-2015) was perhaps the greatest botanical artist and illustrator of his generation, and his passion for the natural world shines through in his highly detailed oil studies of flora and fauna.
